The Mawenzi (also Mawensi = the dark one ) is at 5148  m the second highest mountain in the Kilimanjaro massif , the highest mountain massif in Africa .

It is part of the world natural heritage to which the Kilimanjaro massif was declared by UNESCO in 1987 .

geography

The Mawenzi is located about 340 km south of the equator in northeastern Tanzania . It is the second highest of the three extinct volcanoes of the Kilimanjaro massif , which is located on the edge of the eastern branch ( Eastern Rift ) of the East African Rift Valley and is surrounded by the Kilimanjaro National Park .

Landscape image

The summit region of the steep Mawenzis , a heavily weathered eruptive residue, is not glaciated and carries barren frost debris and steep rock faces.

Rockclimbing

In 1889, Hans Mayer , together with the Austrian mountaineer Ludwig Purtscheller, managed to climb the highest peak of Kilimanjaro, the Kibo , on the third attempt , and their subsequent ascent of Mawenzi failed three times. Fritz Klute and Eduard Hans Oehler only succeeded in defeating it in 1912 .

Rumors of a mountain climbing ban

The ascent of Mawenzi is much more difficult than that of the significantly higher Kibo and requires mountaineering equipment and skills, v. a. because the rock of Mawenzi is considered to be very fragile. For several years now, statements by local guides have been fueling the rumor that ascent is generally prohibited. However, this prohibition is not recorded in writing, so that it is more likely to be understood as a precautionary measure to prevent inexperienced mountaineers from attempting an ascent due to the fragile rock. In general, an ascent therefore appears possible, but only with appropriate preparation and without a guide.

As a rule, an ascent takes place via the saddle between Kibo and Mawenzi, for example via the Marangu route to the Kibo hut ( 4694  m ), see Mountaineering on Kilimanjaro .

Trivia

In 1955 a Douglas DC-3 of East African Airways had an accident on the southeast slope of Mawenzi .
