Max Bretschneider (born April 30, 1872 in Crimmitschau ( Saxony ), † December 28, 1950 in Rome ) was a German bookseller and publisher who mainly worked in Rome.

After completing an apprenticeship as a bookseller, Bretschneider went to Rome in 1894, where he worked with Hermann Loescher's publishing house . After his death, Bretschneider acquired the publishing house in 1896. In 1907 he opened a publishing bookstore under his own name in Via del Tritone, which soon became a meeting place for all antique enthusiasts in the eternal city. In 1928 he moved his bookstore, publishing house and apartment to Via Cassiodoro 19 in the Prati district , where the publishing house's bookstore is still located today. Since 1945 the publisher and bookstore have been called "L'ERMA" di Bretschneider , an acronym for Libreria Editrice Romana Monumenti e Arte . The publisher, which specializes in classical studies , archeology and art history , is still being run as a family business, now in the third generation.
