Max Richter (born March 8, 1900 in Bingen ; † April 12, 1983 in West Berlin ) was a German geologist and paleontologist, professor at the Free University of Berlin .

Life

Richter received his doctorate from the University of Bonn in 1921 and his habilitation in 1923. He then taught in Bonn, where he became an adjunct professor in 1929. In 1937 he became a full professor at the Clausthal mining academy. In 1950 he became a full professor for geology and paleontology at the Free University of Berlin .

He dealt in particular with the geology of the German Alps.

In 1934 he suspected (like Friedrich Levy (died 1943) in Freiburg in 1921) the existence of an ancient Rhine in the Middle Miocene, which flowed from the Kaiserstuhl area into the Lower Rhine bay and was only about 400 km long.

In 1967 he received the Hans Stille Medal . He was a member of the Leopoldina .

He was the father of the geology professor at the Aachen University of Applied Sciences Dieter Richter (1930-1997). In 1984 he published his father's revision of the Allgäu Alps in the Geological Guides collection of Borntraeger.

Max Richter died in Berlin in 1983 at the age of 83. His grave is in the Dahlem forest cemetery .
