Maximilian Joseph von Thurn and Taxis

Prince Maximilian Joseph von Thurn und Taxis (born May 29, 1769 in Regensburg , † May 15, 1831 in Prague ) was a Bavarian and later an imperial major general . He was the founder of the younger Bohemian line of the House of Thurn and Taxis and ancestor of the Italian Principi della Torre e Tasso, dukes of Duino (since 1823).

Life

origin

He was the son of Prince Alexander Ferdinand (1704–1773) from his third marriage to Maria Henriette Josepha (1732–1772), Princess of Fürstenberg-Stühlingen .

Military career

As a three-year-old prince, on April 29, 1772, he received ownership of the cuirassier regiment Taxis from the Prince Elector of Bavaria of the same name . In 1785 he was made a Knight of the Order of Hubert and on May 18, 1790 he was appointed Bavarian Colonel of the Cavalry. Maximilian Joseph entered the imperial service on May 19, 1798 , where he proved himself in the Italian campaign in 1799 at the head of the kk dragoons regiment Prince Lobkowitz . As a result of a serious injury received in the Battle of Marengo (June 1800), he had to break off his active military career. On July 24th, 1800 he was confirmed in his rank as Austrian major general .

Court offices

From December 1, 1803, he held the position of captain of the guard of the expelled Grand Duke of Tuscany and current Elector of Salzburg , Archduke Ferdinand, until he was able to regain government in Italy after the Congress of Vienna in 1814. Maximilian Josef moved to Prague with his family in 1815. He died in 1831 and was buried in the family crypt in Seitzin in the Dobrawitz rule.

Marriage and offspring

On June 6, 1791, in Prague, he married Princess Maria Eleonore von Lobkowitz (* April 22, 1770 in Prague; † November 9, 1834 in Lautschin ), with whom he had six sons, who all achieved high officer ranks:
