Maximos (Metropolitan)

Maximos (Russian, Ukrainian Максим , Maksim , † 1305 ) was the Orthodox metropolitan of Kiev and Vladimir from 1283 to 1305.

Life

Maximos was Greek . In 1283 he came to Kiev from the Byzantine Empire as the new metropolitan. Since the city was badly devastated as a result of several incursions by the Golden Horde , he went to Bryansk , then to Suzdal . In 1299 he moved the seat of the metropolis to Vladimir an der Kilyasma (in today's Russia), which at that time was also the seat of the Grand Duke of the Kievan Rus . Maximos mediated in the power struggles of various princes of the Rus and visited the area of ​​the Golden Horde several times.

In 1301 he was at the Synod of the Orthodox Church in Constantinople , in which the difficult situation of the churches in Rus was also discussed. In 1303 a separate metropolis was created for Galicia .

Macimos died in 1305. He is buried in the Cathedral of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary in Vladimir. A miraculous icon of the Theotokos was placed above his grave.

Maximos set additional fasting times for the Orthodox Church in Rus, in addition to fasting before Easter also before Christmas, and the feasts of Peter and Paul and the Annunciation.

He wrote a pamphlet on marriage in which he emphasized its indissolubility and the subordination of women to husbands.

Adoration of saints

Maximos is venerated as a saint in the Russian Orthodox and Ukrainian Orthodox Churches. His feast day is December 6th.
