Pseudotropheus livingstonii ( Syn .: Maylandia livingstonii, Metriaclima livingstonii ) is a small cichlid species that is endemic to the East African Lake Malawi . The species was named in honor of the Scottish Africa explorer David Livingstone , who reached the lake in search of the sources of the Zambezi in 1859 and named it "Lake Nyasa".
Appearance
Male Pseudotropheus livingstonii reach a maximum length of 14 cm, females stay a little smaller. They are relatively high back and strongly flattened on the sides. The male fish are blue, with yellow-lined dorsal and anal fins, yellow caudal fin and yellow throat. There are several yellow spots on the anal fin. A drawing of black to dark blue stripes runs vertically over the whole body. The females are inconspicuous with yellow-brown unpaired fins.
Way of life
Pseudotropheus livingstonii lives above pure sandy areas in areas where snail shells of the apple snail genus Lanistes can be found. However, the snail shells only use the fish as a hiding place and not as a spawning area, like the snail cichlids endemic to Lake Tanganyika . Pseudotropheus livingstonii maintains its brood as a mouthbrooder . The incubation period is 16 days. When leaving the parent's mouth, the fry are relatively small. Pseudotropheus livingstonii feeds on invertebrates that are found in the sand and on detritus .
