Mbaraka Mwinshehe

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Mbaraka Mwinshehe Mwaruka (born June 27, 1944 in Morogoro , Tanzania , † January 13, 1979 in Mombasa , Kenya ) was a Tanzanian guitarist and singer. He was a very successful representative of Muziki wa dansi with the Morogoro Jazz Band and the Orchestra Super Volcano in the 1970s and was also referred to as Franco East Africa.

Life

Mwinshehe was born in Morogoro in 1944 as the son of an accountant in sisal production. He went to Mzumbe Secondary School and earned a "Form 3" degree. On July 13, 1972, he married Amney Kadirbaksh Shadad.

Mwinshehe learned to play the guitar by himself and was part of the Kwela band Cuban Branch Jazz in his youth . He learned singing from Salim Abdullah , one of the founding fathers of the Morogoro Jazz Band, whom he joined in 1964 as a guitarist. In 1970 Mwinshehe was even a member of the Tanzanian cultural contingent at Expo '70 in Osaka . Although the Morogoro Jazz Band was independent, i.e. not state-owned as was common in socialist Tanzania at the time, they won a competition of the TANU Youth League in May 1970 with the song "TANU Yajenga Nchi" ( Kisuaheli for: "TANU builds the nation") and published it other songs that are positive for TANU. Mwinshehe left the Morogoro Jazz Band in 1973 and founded his own band with the Orchestra Super Volcano. With Super Volcano, Mwinshehe was also successful as a band leader, recorded records at PolyGram in Nairobi and toured East Africa.

Mwinshehe had a serious accident in a car accident on the Mombasa- Malindi route and died in the hospital due to high blood loss and a lack of donor blood.

Publications after his death

After Mwinshehe's death, several albums with songs from his entire music career were released under the name “Ukumbusho” ( kiswahili for “memories”).
