History
The name of the place McGill goes back to William N. McGill, who sold parts of his property in this area to the Steptoe Valley Mining and Smelter Company (Nevada Consolidated Copper Co., later Kennecott). Between 1906 and 1908 a copper smelter was built and connected to the Nevada Northern Railway , which made the place grow. Large parts of the industrial facilities and many buildings were destroyed in a fire in 1922, but were rebuilt by 1930. In the late 1970s, the copper smelter was closed and later demolished. The historic McGill Drugstore Museum is a reminder of the town's heyday.
McGill is now the starting point for tours to the nearby and very mountainous wilderness areas of Bristolcone Wilderness and Becky Peak Wilderness .
