The Mcleod River on the upper reaches

The Mcleod River is a tributary of the Athabasca River in the Canadian part of the Rocky Mountains . About the Athabasca River and Slave River it belongs to the catchment area of the Mackenzie River .

The river has its source in western Alberta , just outside Jasper National Park through the confluence of Thornton Creek and Cheviot Creek. The two creeks are fed by meltwater on the western flanks of Tripoli Mountain and Cheviot Mountain. The Mcleod River then follows Grave Flats Road, taking in water from Prospect Creek, Whitehorse Creek, and Cadomin Creek before pouring into Lac Des Roches , which is south of the town of Cadomin.

The river then meanders through the foothills of the mountains. Four important tributaries soon flow into it: Gregg River , Erith River , Embarras River and Edson River , before the Mcleod River finally flows into the Athabasca River at Whitecourt .
