The Meat Corporation of Namibia (exclusively Meatco on the outside ) is the largest meat processing and exporting company in Namibia . It was founded in the early 1980s from various independent slaughterhouses .

The company is viewed by the Namibian government as a state-owned company , and there has been a dispute about this since 2006, as Meatco is in fact a private stock corporation.

The conversion of the company into a cooperative has been discussed since the end of June 2011, which was confirmed by the cabinet at the end of July 2011.

Company structure and production

Meatco operates from its headquarters in the Namibian capital Windhoek and has subsidiaries in Europe ( London ) and South Africa ( Johannesburg and Cape Town ).

Meatco slaughters more than 120,000 cattle per year through its own slaughterhouses in accordance with ISO 9001 / HACCP and produces more than 27,000 tons of meat and 14 million canned meat from it. Meatco has a share of around 80% in Namibia's meat exports. The export takes place mainly to South Africa and the European Union , especially to Great Britain . In Germany , Meatco's beef is sold by, among others, CaroNam GmbH . 1600 tons are exported to Norway annually.

Metaco operates its own slaughterhouses in accordance with international and European standards in various cities in Namibia:

  • Windhoek, since 1950, 570 employees
    • Slaughter capacity per day: 500 cattle, 1700 sheep, 180 pigs
    • Can capacity per day: 80,000 beef cans
  • Okahandja , since 1950, 371 employees
    • Slaughter capacity per day: 500 cattle
  • Oshakati (since 1976) and Katima Mulilo , 172 employees, both slaughterhouses for internal market only
    • Slaughter capacity per day: 200 cattle

In addition, Meatco operates its own tannery called “Meatco Okapuka Tannery” near Brakwater , which has been producing around 1000 skins per day since 1992.

Products

Metaco mainly produces frozen, vacuum-packed beef cuts for export. In addition, ready-to-eat meat parts and corned beef are produced. All organic products come from free-range Namibian cattle.
