Mecetronium methyl sulfate ( MES ) is a surfactant and disinfectant that belongs to the chemical class of quaternary ammonium compounds . It has been used for hand disinfection for decades - as a mixture with 1-propanol , 2-propanol and patent blue .

Extraction and presentation

Mecetronium methyl sulfate can be obtained from dimethylsoyaamine .

Pharmacological properties

The substance has extensive effectiveness against bacteria , the effectiveness against gram-positive bacteria being much higher than against gram-negative bacteria. It is also effective against yeasts .
