history

Mechanicsville's historic village center is a well-preserved example of Bucks County's early 19th century settlement. Originally, many artisans settled in the village. The village was also known for the Samuel Wilson Seed Company.

The village first flourished in 1803 with the expansion of Durham Road to Lumberville. Lumberville is on the Delaware River and already had a road connection to Doylestown . In the next few years, many artisans settled here. The village did not develop around a tavern or mill, as is often the case, but more because of the local craftsmen ( mechanics ). Therefore, the village was renamed Mechanicsville in 1830. In the second half of the 19th century, five blacksmiths , four shoemakers , three carpenters , a wheelwright and a tailor lived here .

The place did not develop significantly in the early 20th century. A small village remained at the intersection. Most of the village was bought by Samuel Wilson. Wilson focused more on the development of agriculture and less on other branches of the economy.
