The Virneburg , ancestral seat of the Counts of Virneburg

The Counts of Virneburg were a noble family that belonged to the most influential noble families in the Rhineland in the Middle Ages. They had their ancestral home at Virneburg Castle . Their territory was the county of Virneburg , which lay in what is now northern Rhineland-Palatinate on the left bank of the Rhine . With Heinrich II. Of Cologne and Heinrich III. of Mainz , the Virneburgers provided two archbishops in the 14th century .

history

The father of the first Count of Virneburg, Hermann, was probably Bernard von Virneburg , who was listed as a witness in documents from the Archbishops of Trier from 1042 to 1061.

The dynasty of the Counts of Virneburg died out with Ruprecht IV in 1445 and was mainly inherited by the Counts of Manderscheid , from whom the county of Virneburg was married to the Counts of Löwenstein-Wertheim at the end of the 16th century .
