Eberhard von Virneburg

Eberhard von Virneburg (* at Virneburg Castle ; † around 1340, probably in Bonn ) was commander of several comedians of the Teutonic Order and large area in the 14th century .

Life

Eberhard was a son of Count Heinrich von Virneburg (1238-1290) and his wife Ponzetta von Oberstein (1253-1311). He came from a dynasty of counts who had their ancestral seat at Virneburg Castle in the Eifel and which was at the height of its importance in the first half of the 14th century. Two sons from the Virneburg family were archbishops in the 14th century : one, Heinrich III. von Virneburg , in Mainz , the other, Heinrich II. von Virneburg , Eberhard's brother, in Cologne .

Eberhard achieved the highest offices in service for the Teutonic Order. From 1298 to 1304 he was Komtur in Marienburg , then from 1304 to 1309 in Königsberg . In 1309 he took over the office of Colonel Spittler, who was one of the order's major rulers. Eberhard held this position until 1310.

As an aging man, Eberhard von Virneburg retired to the Rhineland, where he again took over the post of commander. From 1322 to 1327 at the Kommende in Rheinberg . In 1328 he was named as Commander of Ramersdorf .

With Bonn him joined family ties. His brother, the Archbishop of Cologne, resided primarily in Bonn and in Vilich his sisters Ponzetta and Jutta were abbesses .

One last message about Eberhard comes from December 8th, 1339. On this day he announced the verdict in a dispute that the Ramersdorfer Kommende had with the dean of the St. Georg monastery in Cologne.
