Gottfried I. (Arnsberg)
Gottfried von Cuyk († after 1168) was Burgrave of Utrecht and since 1132 Count of Werl-Arnsberg .
Gottfried was the son of Count Heinrich I von Cuyk and his wife Alveradis von Hochstaden. He married Ida von Werl-Arnsberg , this was the daughter of Count Frederick I .
As his father's successor, he and his mother founded the Marienweerd monastery in 1129 . He became Burgrave of Utrecht and in this office was general of the Bishop of Utrecht in the fight against Dietrich IV. Count of Holland . He also fought against the Frisian rebel Florence the Black . For this act Gottfried was temporarily banned. In 1133 he was probably the actual founder of Clarholz Abbey . After the death of Count Friedrich von Werl-Arnsberg, who had no male descendants, the County of Werl-Arnsberg passed to Count Gottfried as the husband of the heiress Ida. Because of his Dutch duties and possessions, Gottfried rarely resided in Arnsberg. The fact that Gottfried only dubbed himself Count von Arnsberg in documents in 1142 speaks for the low importance of the County of Werl-Arnsberg. During his tenure, the county lost Rietberg , the pin Bailiwick over the diocese of Paderborn and the Alme- and Diemelgau.
In imperial politics, Gottfried played a not insignificant role as a follower of the Staufer and is mentioned several times as a witness in imperial documents. Gottfried partly took part in imperial court camps with his brother Heinrich in 1141 in Cologne , 1145 in Aachen and Utrecht , and 1147 in Aachen and Nijmegen . Conrad III. gave him permission as "beloved and loyal Gottfried, Count von Arnsberg and Cuyk" to build a permanent castle on his property. Possibly this meant a first system in Altena Castle . Friedrich I caused the Bishop of Paderborn to return the former property to the count.
The year Gottfried died is unknown. He was last mentioned in a document in 1168. His son Heinrich became his successor after he had already been Gottfried's co-regent during his lifetime.
Further descendants were Adelheid, the heiress of Altena, married to Eberhard I. Graf von Berg and Jutta, abbess of Herford Abbey . A daughter whose name was not known was married to Hermann II, Count von Virneburg . The daughter Alverada was the heir to the Dutch estate of Malsen and was married to Otto I. Count von Bentheim-Holland . There was also another son named Friedrich.
