Medal for the Defenders of Independence

The Medal for the Defenders of Independence ( Romanian Medalia Apărătorii Independenței ) was donated on June 5, 1878 by Prince Carol I with Decree No. 1422 and was intended to honor people who were in the military or during the war against the Ottoman Empire civil sector involved and had proven successful.

Appearance

The award is a round medal made of bronze , which shows the allegorical goddess of victory standing on trophies of arms and flags . On her right outstretched arm she holds the victory wreath , in her left a vertical sword . In the background, offset to the left, an angel carrying a flag . On the reverse there is the five-line inscription APARATORILOR INDEPENDINTEI IN RESBELUL 1877–1878 (defender of independence in the war 1877–1878), which is exaggerated by the crowned and mirrored cipher of the founder C (Carol), as well as by a laurel tied at the bottom - (right) and oak wreath (left) is enclosed.

Carrying method

The award was worn by military personnel on a light blue ribbon with a gold side and a red border, by civilians on a dark blue ribbon with red, yellow and red border on the left side of the chest.
