Vegetative characteristics

Medicago littoralis is an annual , herbaceous plant that reaches heights of between 10 and 15 centimeters.

The alternate and spirally arranged, stalked leaves are pinnate in three parts. The leaflets are inverted triangular to inverted ovoid. The edge of the spread is sawn in the upper part. The blades are densely hairy on both sides. The stipules are serrated.

Generative characteristics

The racemose inflorescences have two to five flowers. The inflorescence axis is one third longer than the petiole of the adjacent leaf. The petals stand together in the typical shape of the butterfly flower .

The legumes are rolled up like a snail and prickly. The snails are small, cylindrical and bare. The spines are between 4 and 5 millimeters long and are at an angle of 90 ° to 120 ° to the surface of the curl. Each legume contains three seeds .

Chromosome number

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 14 + 0-1B or 16.

ecology

Medicago littoralis lives in a mutualistic symbiosis with the nodule bacterium (Rhizobiaceae) Sinorhizobium meliloti . This has the ability to bind elemental, molecular nitrogen .

distribution

Medicago littoralis is native to the Mediterranean region and occurs in the European Mediterranean countries as well as in the Middle East and North Africa. It is also common in the Canary Islands , the Black Sea and the Caspian Sea. Neophytic occurrences are found on the east coast of the United States and in western and southern Australia.

Culture

Medicago littoralis is used as a fodder plant , and it can be processed into both hay and silage . The yields are then 1.2 to 5 tons of silage per hectare or 0.4 to 2.6 tons of hay per hectare.
