The Association of Physicians and Scientists for Health, Freedom and Democracy e. V. , or MWGFD for short, is an association based in Passau . It was founded in May 2020 and aims to counteract government measures to contain the COVID-19 pandemic .

Members

Among the founding members, apart from the biochemist Karina Reiß, there are no scientists currently doing medical research at a university. The most prominent members are the emeritus microbiology professor and YouTuber Sucharit Bhakdi , the ear, nose and throat doctor and specialist in dizziness Bodo Schiffmann, the financial scientist Stefan Homburg , the former medical officer Wolfgang Wodarg , the experimental pharmacologist and entrepreneur Stefan Hockertz , the psychotherapist and inventor Unrecognized therapy methods Franz Ruppert and the esoteric Harald Walach .

aims

The association considers the preventive measures taken in the course of the so-called corona crisis to be excessive. He wants to build a network of doctors in order to issue certificates of exemption from wearing masks, which are recommended for infection protection reasons. The State Medical Association of Saxony sees this as a violation of the professional code  and a criminal offense. The Passau gynecologist Ronald Weikl, deputy board member of the association and speaker at corona denier demonstrations, came under criticism from the press and the Lower Bavaria Medical District Association because he issued numerous certificates that said his patients did not have to use a mask for health reasons. Journalists from Report Mainz found in an investigative research that medical members of the association issued certificates without prior examination. The SPD politician and doctor Karl Lauterbach described this as "criminal". Section 278 of the Criminal Code prohibits the issuing of incorrect health certificates.

In March, Sucharit Bhakdi doubted the danger of certain corona viruses in a YouTube video and spoke of excessive measures. The measures against "the corona virus" are "pointless and self-destructive" and the virus is hardly more dangerous than a flu wave. In a fact check by ZDF , his claims were refuted, for example he had said that 99 percent of COVID-19 infections were harmless.

criticism

The views expressed by the members on the corona pandemic are not shared by the majority of doctors and scientists and in some cases even refuted.

The MWGFD board tolerates that several members actively undermine "scientific and evidence". One MWGFD member, the doctor and so-called “ quantum healer ” Andreas Diemer, recommends taking or injecting chlorine dioxide on the Internet against “viruses, including Covid-19 and other corona viruses” - but this treatment is according to the state of the art ineffective and can be life-threatening.

Pia Lamberty , social psychologist at Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz, sees in the association's claim that the corona virus is “pure scare tactics”, a “conspiracy mentality”, supporters of such a belief showed “unbelievable unwaveringness even in the face of the toughest contradictions”.
