He became known in spring 2020 for his public criticism of the medical and political handling of the corona virus .

Life

Stefan Hockertz studied at the University of Hannover Biology (Diploma 1985) and was there with a dissertation on function of cells of the macrophage system in Leishmania donovani infection in 1988 his doctorate . He then qualified as a professor at the University of Hamburg in the fields of toxicology and pharmacology .

He then worked independently and is today (2020) managing director of tpi consult GmbH in Bollschweil near Freiburg, which he founded in 1994 .

COVID-19 pandemic in Germany

In connection with the Covid-19 pandemic in Germany, Stefan Hockertz expressed the opinion that the political reaction was disproportionate, authoritarian, opinionated and excessive and justified his view with statements about the "dangerousness of the coronavirus", which he referred to the dangerousness of influenza viruses compared. According to its own research, Bayerischer Rundfunk considered this assessment premature and in some cases imprecise.

The editor for education and knowledge, Jeanne Turczynski, took a critical look at Hockertz's claims at Bayerischer Rundfunk. In her podcast of March 26, 2020, she considered some of his statements to be correct, such as his information on the calculation of death rates and the dismantling of hospital beds in intensive care units in Italy. In other statements, such as inadequate hospital hygiene in Italy and Spain, she missed the sources. In Turczynski's opinion, there was no sufficient data basis for further claims by Hockertz, especially to be able to make statements in one direction or the other, for example when comparing the danger of COVID-19 with the danger of influenza.

Shortly afterwards, on April 2, an article by Lea Weinmann was published on Correctiv - Verlag und Vertrieb für die Gesellschaft UG on precisely this question . Isn't it overwritten with coronavirus more dangerous than flu? Why Stefan Hockertz's claims are misleading.

In an interview with Gerlinde Jänicke on May 19, 2020, 9:18 a.m. on the radio station 94.3 rs2 , Hockertz stuck to his statement that Covid-19 is about as dangerous as influenza. He based his repeated assertion on documents from John Ioannidis from Stanford University and own conclusions from the results of the COVID-19 case cluster study by Hendrik Streeck .
