The first school in Germany was established in 1969 at the Ulm University Hospital . The training to become a medical documentary takes a total of three years, the training to become a medical documentation assistant, depending on the federal state, takes two to three years and consists of the fields of medicine , statistics , documentation , IT , organization , profession and law .

Theoretical knowledge is deepened through two to three specialist internships at various locations in Germany and abroad.

The entrance requirement for the medical documentary training is usually the Abitur or the technical college entrance qualification , in individual cases a good middle school leaving certificate is sufficient . For the training to become a medical documentation assistant, a secondary school leaving certificate, a technical college certificate or a secondary school certificate with successfully completed training is required.

There are numerous public and privately operated training centers in Germany, which often operate under the name School for Medical Documentation (see the website of the professional association).
