Meehyun Chung ( 정미현 ; * 1963 in Seoul ) is a Korean Protestant theologian and church historian . She is a professor at the United Graduate School of Theology at Yonsei Christian University and the first female student pastor at that university.

Life

Meehyun Chung, born and raised in South Korea, received her BA in German Studies and an MA in Systematic Theology from Ewha Womans University in Seoul . At the University of Basel she received her PhD in 1993 with a thesis on Karl Barth , Josef Lukl Hromádka and Korea in January Milič Lochman Dr. theol. in systematic theology. She taught undergraduate and graduate courses in theology and Christianity at Ewha Woman's University before working as head of the women and gender department at Mission 21 in Basel from 2005 to March 2013 . In April 2013 she returned to Korea as a professor.

She is an ordained minister in the Presbyterian Church of the Republic of Korea (PROK). From 2001 to 2006 she was Vice President of the Ecumenical Association of Third World Theologians (EATWOT). She has published several articles and books on contemporary theological topics in Korean , German and English. She also translated numerous theological works into Korean , including those by Barth, Lochman, Ulrich Zwingli , Dorothee Sölle and Lukas Vischer . She is the editor of the Korean Journal of Systematic Theology . In her work she tries to hold critical conversations between the global north and south and reformed traditions on current issues.

Meehyun Chung is a systematic theologian who works at the interface between systematic theology, gender theory, ecumenism and sustainable development. Her research interests focus on the relationship between European theology and theology from the global south, or the relationship between the Reformed tradition and feminist ideas in terms of critical reflection on power, spirituality, and social justice.

One of her books published in German is titled Reis und Wasser. A feminist theology from Korea . In it, she critically examines Korean culture and the adaptation of the Reformed tradition in Korean theology and church. She also published a number of books in Korean.

Honors

In 2006 she received the Karl Barth Prize of the Evangelical Church in Germany (EKD) for her doctoral thesis and other articles and the Marga Bührig Prize in 2013 . In 2017 she was ranked among the ten most important Reformed theologians at a conference of the World Communion of Reformed Churches (WCRC) in Leipzig .
