Jan Milič Lochman

Jan Milič Lochman (born April 3, 1922 in Nové Město nad Metují , Czechoslovakia ; † January 21, 2004 in Basel , Switzerland ) was a Czechoslovak-Swiss Protestant theologian .

Life

Lochman came from a family with an Evangelical- Hussite tradition. In 1941 he graduated from the Náchod grammar school . After the Czech part of Charles University was reopened in 1945, he studied theology and philosophy at the Hussite Theological Faculty and received his doctorate in 1948. He then became the pastor of the Evangelical Church of Czech Brethren ordained . After a short time as a preacher , he went back to the Comenius Faculty in Prague , where he completed his habilitation and worked as a lecturer. From 1960 he taught there as a professor of philosophy and systematic theology . After a year at Union Theological Seminary of Columbia University in New York City , he was in 1968 by the University of Basel to full professor nominated for Systematic Theology. In 1981 and 1982 he was rector of the University of Basel. From 1990 he was also able to give guest lectures at Czech and Slovak universities. In 1992 he retired .

Lochman served on ecumenical bodies for decades, particularly the World Council of Churches . From 1968 to 1975 he was a member of the WCC central and executive committee and from 1975 to 1991 a member of the WCC Faith and Order Commission. He also worked with the Reformed World Federation : from 1970 to 1982 as chairman of the theological department. His fundamental work originated in the field of systematic and ecumenical theology.

Jan Milič Lochman was one of the founders of the Christian Peace Conference . At its third meeting in 1960, he worked on the preparation of the First All-Christian Peace Assembly in 1961 in Prague . There he led the working group “ Cold War ” together with the Federal German Wolfgang Schweitzer and the Hungarian M. Pálfy .
