The Meerpfuhl is a pond near Merzhausen , a district of Usingen with a size of about 1.6 hectares . It stands as a cultural monument under monument protection .

history

It is not known exactly when the Meerpfuhl was created. The pond is mentioned for the first time in 1550 as “weier imjoy”. This name, similar to a later mention in 1579 as "Egerpfuhl", refers to the surrounding marshland . The Walderdorff family , who had been wealthy since 1476 and had the rights of collision there since 1515 , had the pond built as a water reservoir for the mills in Weiltal . The Meerpfuhlbach leads through a side valley of the Weil von Weiher to the Landsteiner Mühle . Downstream, the other mills in the Weiltal up to the Emmershausen mill also benefited from the water supply. The controllable discharge of the pond can still be seen today as a dead straight ditch in the area.

In 1752 the Hombruch family from Altweilnau sold the pond to the rulers of Nassau-Usingen . In this context, a map was made that shows the pond within its current limits. The pond has been owned by the State of Hesse since 1945 .

The poisoning in 1977

The pond is leased by the Hochtaunus fishing association. It was considered to be an ecologically extremely important body of water with a multitude of rare plants and animals. In particular, it was considered the only Hessian site of the "floating frog herb" ( Luronium natans ). On September 17, 1977, however, the ecosystem was destroyed by an attempt by the fishing association to reduce the amount of weeds in the pond. The herbicideGramoxone ” (now banned) was used . The effect of this plant poison, however, went far beyond what was desired and permanently damaged the entire flora of the pond. Even if extensive protective measures were taken over the years, the old diversity was not achieved again for a long time.

Refurbishment 2016/2017

Due to the hillside location, soil is regularly washed into the pond. It is therefore systematically boggy. A renovation concept was therefore proposed in 2012. After all permits had been obtained, employees of the Rhein-Main landfill dug around 1000 tons of sludge in 2016/17 and spread it in a forest area to create a wild field.

The Meerpfuhlbach

The dammed Meerpfuhl near Merzhausen is the source for the approximately 2 kilometer long course of the Meerpfuhlbach, which flows largely through (coniferous) forest. In the underflow investigated, there are isolated stones, rather fine gravel substrate and, in some places, extensive sandy to muddy deposits.

The very old, landscape-defining oak at the Meerpfuhl is protected as a natural monument. It is located directly at the parking lot at Merpfuhl on the B 275 .
