The Meesenburg is now the remainder of a hilltop castle on the 225.8 meter high Meesenkopf south of the city of Lübbecke in the Minden-Lübbecke district in North Rhine-Westphalia .
The castle was probably built by Count Otto I of Tecklenburg (1209–1263). This Mecklenburg castle was then conquered and destroyed by the Minden Bishop Konrad I von Rüdenberg in a joint military operation with the Diocese of Osnabrück . Allegedly, the fortification on the Meesenkopf is said to have been removed around 1216 at the instigation of Minden Bishop Konrad. The stones were used for the construction of the St. Andreas Church in Lübbecke, according to the more recent bishops' chronicles. Today only the ramparts and the moat can be seen of the castle .
