Megacoelum infusum is a species of bug from the family of soft bugs (Miridae).
features
The bugs are 6.0 to 7.2 millimeters long. They are strikingly orange-brown in color and have long legs and antennae . The top of the body is smooth and almost hairless. The posterior part of the corium of the hemielytres is unusually dark and the cuneus is completely orange in color.
Occurrence and habitat
The species is common in Europe, with the exception of the far north and in the south only in the northern Mediterranean area. To the east, the distribution extends to Ukraine and Asia Minor. The species is widespread in Germany and Austria, but is not common. Loose, sunny wooded areas are populated, for example at the edges of the forest, shrubbery with favorable temperatures and isolated trees. Dense, shady stands are avoided.
Way of life
Unlike Megacoelum beckeri, the species only lives on deciduous trees, mainly on oaks ( Quercus ), more rarely also on linden ( Tilia ), hazel ( Corylus ), birch ( Betula ), willow ( Salix ), ash ( Fraxinus ) and others. The animals predominantly feed on aphids and leaf fleas , small caterpillars and other invertebrates. The bugs are said to be predominantly crepuscular and nocturnal. As with Megacoelum beckeri , the adults can be found from the beginning of July to October, with almost all females living from September onwards. The overwintering takes place as an egg. These are stabbed in the cracks of bark on the branches or in woody shoots.
