Megalocoleus tanaceti is a species of bug from the family of soft bugs (Miridae).

features

The bugs are 4.3 to 5.2 millimeters long. The spurs on the splints ( tibia ) of Megalocoleus species are longer than the splints are wide and the apical tarsal segment is dark. Megalocoleus tanaceti is light yellow-green in color. The top of the body is covered with coarse, black hairs.

Occurrence and habitat

The species is widespread in Europe, but occurs in the Mediterranean area only in the north. To the east the distribution extends to Siberia and the Caspian region. It is widespread in Germany and more common in the north than Megalocoleus molliculus . So far it has only been found sporadically in Austria, particularly in the east. Different habitats are colonized in which their host plants grow, such as dry, warm and open, but also moist and partially shaded habitats.

Way of life

The bugs live on tansy ( Tanacetum vulgare ) and only rarely on other daisy family (Asteraceae). Both the nymphs and the adults suckle on the vegetative parts of the plants as well as on their reproductive organs and the pollen. They are mainly found inside the inflorescences. Adults occur from mid / late June to mid September. The females pierce their eggs in irregular groups into the stems of the host plants.
