features

butterfly

The wingspan of the moth is 37 to 42 millimeters. The forewings are brownish in color. The middle field usually has a chocolate brown color and is bordered by two thin white cross lines. Sometimes it is slightly reddish dust on the inner edge. The ring flaw is small and outlined in white, the silver-white kidney flaw shows a strong constriction. A particularly large, fully silver-white filled gamma- like symbol is noticeable . The hind wings are gray-brown without drawing, somewhat darkened at the edge. The thorax is furry and has a few tufts of hair.

Caterpillar

Adult caterpillars are pale yellow-green in color. They have indistinct, thin white side back lines and side stripes. The head has a black stripe on each side.

distribution and habitat

Megalographa biloba occurs widespread in the USA (including Hawaii ) and in southern Canada . The southern expansion extends to Patagonia . The species is not native to Europe, but has been found several times in the British Isles , where it was probably introduced by sea. Occasional brood on site cannot be entirely ruled out. The species likes to colonize cultural landscapes.

Way of life

The moths of Megalographa biloba can be found from March to November, in the southern regions probably in consecutive generations. The caterpillars feed on the leaves of various plants, and increasingly also on cultivated plants such as lettuce , cabbage , beans and tobacco , on which they are sometimes harmful .
