Ignaz von Jaumann

Franz Ignaz Jaumann , from 1828 von Jaumann , (born January 26, 1778 in Wallerstein , † January 12, 1862 in Rottenburg am Neckar ) was cathedral chapter in the diocese of Rottenburg , archaeologist and politician .

Life

Jaumann, the son of a master baker, attended the Latin school in Wallerstein and, due to his musical talent, frequented the court of the princes of Oettingen-Wallerstein . Under the guidance of a brother, a vicar choir at the cathedral in Augsburg , he continued his studies there, then went to the Pfaffenhausen seminary and was ordained priest in 1801 . This was followed by the vicariate in Marktoffingen and Minderoffingen and, from 1803 to 1805, the service as chaplain in Schwendi .

From 1805 Jaumann was pastor in Großschafhausen , from 1811 also school inspector. In 1814 he was appointed dean and pastor of Rottenburg am Neckar . There he played a leading role in the reorganization of the municipal school system and in the fight against the famine of 1817, and he also played a major role in the relocation of the Catholic Vicariate General and the seminary from Ellwangen (Jagst) to Rottenburg, for which he was appointed Vicariate Councilor in December 1817 has been. From 1818 to 1821 he was also an advisor to the Minister in the Department of Churches and Schools Karl August von Wangenheim .

After the Rottenburg diocese was founded in 1828, Jaumann was appointed cathedral dean and thus chairman of the cathedral chapter . From 1826 to 1849 he was a member of the second chamber of the Württemberg state parliament , as a member of the cathedral chapter. From 1845 to 1848, after the death of Bishop Johann Baptist von Keller , Jaumann headed the diocese as vicar capitular .

In 1850 he made a trip to London and Paris and described the same in a book. At the celebration of his golden jubilee as a priest in 1851, in addition to various honors, the University of Tübingen awarded him the academic degree of Doctor iuris canonici .

Political commitment

Jaumann made a significant contribution to the peaceful development of the Catholic church in the Kingdom of Württemberg , especially during the church dispute of 1841, his prudence proved itself. Often he tried to smooth things over by his bishop. He also made great contributions to the establishment of the Museum of Fine Arts in Stuttgart . It was through his efforts that the lapidarium , a collection of Roman picture and inscription stones found in Württemberg, founded by Duke Ludwig von Württemberg , was also housed there.

Archaeological engagement

Jaumann was concerned with the antiquity research in the Rottenburg area and was one of the initiators and founders of the Sülchgauer Antiquities Association in 1852. In 1820 he began to collect the Roman antiquities that came to light in Rottenburg by collecting accidental finds, but also finds from small excavations that he had it done at its own expense. The presentation of his collection and the regular publication of reports on finds made him a reputable archaeologist in southern Germany . There were various other publications of his research. In 1852 Theodor Mommsen expressed concerns about the authenticity of various pieces in Jaumann's collection. At the fifth meeting of German history and antiquity researchers in Ulm in 1855, a commission appointed for this purpose declared 15 stamps and all the inscriptions carved on, actually genuine, vessel disks to be false, and these finds were probably brought to him. He bequeathed his collection of valuable Roman picture and inscription stones to the State Collection for Patriotic Art and Antiquity Monuments in Stuttgart.
