Megistopus flavicornis is a lacewings from the family of antlion (Myrmeleontidae).
features
The adults reach a fore wing length of about 25 millimeters. On the forewings there is a round dark brown spot in the middle of the rear margin. The legs are long and thin with an unusually long tarsus . There are spurs on the tibia .
The larvae are about 10 millimeters long.
distribution
The distribution area of Megistopus flavicornis extends from south-east Central Europe and the Mediterranean to south-west Asia . In the east and south of Central Europe one finds the species in Hungary , Slovakia , in the Czech Republic , in the east of Austria and in Switzerland . The species inhabits light deciduous forests and the maquis .
biology
The larvae live terrikol and do not build funnels. The development time in south-eastern Europe ( Bulgaria ) takes one year, in the north of the distribution area up to two years. The adults are nocturnal and come to light . Usually they are only found individually, but Megistopus flavicornis is one of the more common species in the family in Europe. In southern Europe, the adults fly from May to July.
