Mehmed Celal Bey

Mehmed Celal Bey ( Ottoman محمد جلال بك; * 1863 in Kızıltoprak , Kadıköy ; † 1926 in Istanbul ) was multiple governor and minister of the Ottoman Empire . He was an eyewitness to the Armenian genocide .

Life

Mehmed Celal Bey was born in the Kızıltoprak neighborhood of Istanbul in 1863 . From March 1910, Mehmed Celal Bey was governor of the Vilayets Erzurum , which he remained until July 1911. Between June and October 1911 he was governor of Vilâyet Edirne , from June 1911 to August 1912 governor of Vilâyets Aydin , from July 1913 to June 1915 governor Aleppo , from June to September 1915 governor Konyas and from November 1919 to August 1920 governor Adanas .

Between October and December 1911 he was also Minister of the Interior and between January and July 1913 Minister of Commerce . As governor of Konya , he reported on the massacres of the Armenians :

“Instead of water, blood flowed in the river, and thousands of sinless children, innocent old people, helpless women, strong boys flowed into nothing in this bloodstream. I saved what I could hold on to with my hands and nails. The rest, I believe, flowed away with no hope of returning. "

Mehmed Celal Bey was the governor of Aleppo and Konya during the genocide . From December 10-13, 1918, he stated in a three-part article printed on the front page of the Vakit newspaper that he did his best during the deportations to prevent the mistreatment of Armenian fellow citizens, but that he had to resign as a result.

Celal Bey was Lord Mayor ( Belediye Başkanı ) of the Ottoman capital between June 1921 and March 1922 at the time of the occupation of Istanbul . He died there in 1926. His grave was in what is now Taksim Square . However, it was leveled in 1940 in the course of road construction work.
