Mehmet Şevket Eygi (born February 7, 1933 in Ereğli ; † July 12, 2019 in Istanbul ) was a Turkish Islamic columnist for Millî Gazete .

Life

Mehmet Şevket Eygi was born in Ereğli in 1933, which at that time belonged to Kastamonu . Mehmet was his father's name, Şevket the name of his grandfather and his maternal grandmother. Eygi attended Galatasaray High School in Istanbul from 1940 to 1952 . There he completed elementary school and high school.

Thanks to a scholarship, he studied political science at the Faculty of Political Science (also called Mülkiye ) of Ankara University . He also worked in the local French cultural center.

In 1956 he finished his studies. He then worked in the language department of Diyanet İşleri Başkanlığı as a translator. Together with friends he brought out the magazine "İslam" in 1957. He completed his military service in 1958 as a non-commissioned officer in the reserve.

In 1961, Eygi was sentenced to prison for the first time because he - according to his own testimony - had argued in an article that the most heinous crimes were those committed in the "shadow of the law".

In 1965 Mehmet Şevket Eygi started working as a journalist for the daily Bugün . On the eve of the so-called “ Bloody Sunday ” ( Kanlı Pazar ) of February 16, 1969, Eygi called on readers in the Bugün newspaper to be ready for the jihad . A war between the Muslims and the "red infidels" is inevitable and no Muslim should stand aside. Shortly afterwards, Eygi left Turkey because of the threat of prosecution. He stayed abroad for a total of five and a half years. He first spent a few months in Saudi Arabia , two weeks in Jordan, three months in Beirut and finally stayed in Germany . Eygi also lived briefly in Paris .

In the autumn of 1974 he returned to Turkey. There he said he worked for Son Haber , was editor-in-chief of the daily newspaper Zaman for three months and worked for a few months for the daily newspaper Son Çağrı .

In 1991 he took up his unpaid work for the Millî Gazete , which he carried out until his death. Some time later, he was sentenced to a 28-month prison term for articles he published in the 1980s.

In 2002 Eygi was sentenced to 20 months' imprisonment for a column entitled "The Terror of Religious Hostility". In 2005, he was convicted of sedition and sentenced to one year in prison. This was commuted to an eight-month prison sentence after a revision process.

Mehmet Şevket Eygi was not married. He regards himself as isolated within the Islamic movement. Ertuğrul Özkök, editor-in-chief of Hürriyet , also describes him as "lonely within the Islamic world".

On July 12, 2019, Mehmet Şevket Eygi died and after a ceremony at the Fatih Mosque , he was buried in the Merkezefendi cemetery. In addition to President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, several ministers and MPs attended his funeral .

ideology

Islam

Eygi has been a religious person since his youth. Eygi considers the secularism that was introduced in Turkey in the 1920s and 1930s to be a "historic accident". He represents a rigid, orthodox and fundamentalist Islam, which he would like to protect from innovations ( bidʿa ) and human influences. He rejects a “moderate”, “watered down”, “tamed”, “tolerant” and “diaologous” Islam without Fiqh , Sharia and Jihad as an “Islam-Light”. An Islam that is adapted to European standards is no longer true Islam. Such an Islam is the goal of "Crusaders and Zionists". They also wanted to appoint a caliph they liked .

Crypto Jews and Freemasons

Eygi's main interests are the so-called Sabetaycı . These Sabetaycı are supposed today's followers of Shabbetaj Zvis , Jews who - according to Eygi's view - disguised as Muslims, secretly directed the fate of Turkey. Eygi describes Adnan Menderes as Sabetaycı, whose death sentence the Sabetaycı would also have made. In 1968, according to his own statement, "the Jews" tried twice to bribe him with several million lira so that he would stop writing about the Sabetaycı. His biggest mistake was to have taken action against Jews, Freemasons, Marxists and Kemalists at the same time.

In 2005, he believed that he was the victim of stalking and revenge on the part of the crypto-Jews for dragging them into public view. They pretend to be Muslims even though they are Jews, and stir up hatred among Muslims.
