Meike Thüllen

Meike Thüllen (* 20th century ) is a German local politician ( FDP ) and former mayor of Aachen .

Live and act

Meike Thüllen joined the FDP in the early 1980s and later moved to the city council of Aachen. In the 1999 local elections, her party entered into a government coalition with the CDU and was elected third mayor of Aachen alongside Sabine Verheyen ( CDU ) and Astrid Ströbele ( SPD ).

During her term of office, Thüllen campaigned primarily for the preservation and promotion of cultural institutions. When, in the course of the budget restructuring in 2003, the existence of the Theater Aachen, among other things, was jeopardized by the CDU's massive cutback plans, Thüllen voted against her coalition partner in the city council and thereby supported the position of the full-time mayor Jürgen Linden of the SPD. As a result of this conflict, Thüllen resigned from the office of mayor under protest on March 13, 2003 and left her party on March 24, 2003, which she wanted to forestall a party expulsion process. She retained her mandate, however, as a result of which the FDP, which previously had only three mandates, lost its parliamentary group status and thus a considerable part of its grants.

Thüllen continued to be involved in local politics outside the city council and in 2010, as part of a citizens' forum initiated by her, campaigned for the secret files on the selection of candidates and the decision on the award of the Aachen Charlemagne Prize that are older than 30 years, to make available to the public, also to enable their scientific evaluation. A decision is still pending.

Thüllen also campaigned for the preservation and renovation of the International Newspaper Museum of the City of Aachen , which was also threatened with closure in 1993. She launched a call to recruit volunteers and collect funding, and founded a corresponding sponsorship association with like-minded people. Nevertheless, it should take until 2008 to start the actual renovation and expansion phase, which was then provisionally concluded with the reopening on July 11, 2011. Then she advocated equipping the museum with a representative glass portal.

In the social area, Thüllen supports various projects, such as the establishment of children's shops and on the board of the Heemann Foundation for people with disabilities.
