Prieuré des Basses Lodge

The Prieuré des Basses Loges was a Carmelite monastery in what is now Avon in the Seine-et-Marne department , a neighboring town of Fontainebleau , around 60 km south of Paris . From the monastery complex of the 17th century, only one building remains, which has been under monument protection since July 11, 1991 as Monument historique .

history

In 1310, a pilgrim hospice with twelve beds was built by Henri d'Autry at the site of the later priory at the intersection of two important streets and placed under spiritual direction. With the takeover of the complex by Carmelites from Touraine in 1632, the charitable purpose was given up. Thanks to grateful donations from Anna of Austria , the wife of King Ludwig XIII. , the monastery flourished again. According to legend, Anna of Austria prayed for conception here after 22 years of childless marriage. Her prayer was answered, so that in 1638 she gave birth to the Dauphin and later King Louis XIV . The promotion continued under his wife Marie Therese , so that monastery buildings, a chapel and six monk cells could be built. During the turmoil of the French Revolution , the monks dispersed and in 1791 the buildings were first nationalized and sold to the Parisian merchant Pierre Philibert Giot, who later became mayor of Avon. The church and chapel were demolished and the prior's building turned into a country house. As a result, it changed hands several times.

In 1922, the esotericist Georges I. Gurdjieff bought the property to establish his institute for the harmonious development of man . The writer Katherine Mansfield , one of his followers, died there on January 9, 1923. After it was almost demolished, the house was gradually renovated in the 1990s .
