Henri Sauval

Henri Sauval (also Sauvalle , baptized March 5, 1623 in Paris ; † March 21, 1676 there) was a French lawyer and historian of the 17th century.

Life

Sauval comes from a family of wealthy traders and became a lawyer in Parliament . He devoted most of his life to researching the archives of his hometown and in 1656 received permission to publish his results as Paris ancien et moderne . However, when he died in 1676, his work was still in the manuscript stage . Sauval used in his text Ollivier Chereau's dictionary Jargon et Langage de l'Argot reformé .

It was not until 1724, more than half a century later, that Sauval's results were published by his colleague Claude Bernard Rousseau under the title Histoire et recherches des antiquités de la ville de Paris , but the book contained additions that did not come from Sauval. Much of the unprinted text was published in 1883 under the title Chronique scandaleuse de Paris, ou Histoire des mauvais lieux .

Sauval's work was so interesting in Rousseau's version that it was reprinted in 1733 and 1750. The original manuscript belonged to the Montmerqué family and later passed to Antoine Le Roux de Lincy , who prepared an annotated edition. Unfortunately, both his work and the original manuscript were lost in the fires during the Paris Commune of 1871. Based on Le Roux's research, however, there is a series of articles on Sauval that appeared in the Bulletin du bibliophile et du bibliothécaire in 1862, 1866 and 1868 .

The Rue Sauval in the 1st arrondissement (Paris) got its name in 1865. The street sign also states 1620–1670 as dates of life
