The Ellen Maersk

Johannes Knudsen ( December 22, 1917 , † February 10, 1957 ) was a Danish engineer who tried to save a Japanese fisherman in a severe storm off the coast of Japan . He died trying. Since then, Knudsen has been honored in Japan.

Knudsen was part of the crew of the Ellen Maersk when it came across a small Japanese fishing boat that was in an emergency on the way from Nagoya to Kobe off the coast of Wakayama near Gobo . First, a rope ladder was lowered from the Ellen Maersk . But since the fisherman was unable to climb it, Knudsen went down to save him. But both men were killed. A bronze statue by Knudsen in Hinomisaki Park commemorates him. The Bangsbo Museum also commemorates the sailor who was buried in Frederikshavn .
