Milestone at Güntersberge

The milestone at Güntersberge is a small monument in the town of Harzgerode in the Harz district in Saxony-Anhalt .

The town of Güntersberge has several milestones in Anhalt that have been converted into new uses. On the Alte Gernröder Strasse , east of Bärenrode, there is a historic round base stone, which has apparently been reworked into a signpost . The letters EN and below it SAU are legible , but these are sufficient to assign the stone, because this corresponds to the usual lettering of milestones in Anhalt, each of which carried the distance from the state capital Dessau . So you can resolve the words with MEILEN and DESSAU .

The stone near the forester's house Uhlenstein marks a historical street layout, because today it is only a forest path. At this he is at a crossroads, the chipped corners are typical for signposts. The fact that this is a historical route and that the stone may even still be in its original location shows that the stone is exactly 13 Anhalt miles away from Dessau. The Anhalt mile corresponded to the Prussian mile and was 7.532 kilometers long. So here we are almost 98 kilometers by road from Dessau.

The former distance indicator is made of granite. It lost its original meaning in 1873. Like all milestones in Saxony-Anhalt, it is a listed building . However, it is apparently not registered in the monument register.
