Erlstätt milestone , part of a wayside shrine near Kraimoos

The Erlstätt milestone is part of the wayside shrine near Kraimoos on the TS2 road from Kraimoos in the municipality of Grabenstätt to Schmidham , a district of Traunstein .

description

The milestone (143 × 60 cm) is made of limestone. It was made at the time of the Roman settlement of Chiemgau around 200 AD.

The attached lantern is made of Ruhpolding marble . The incorporated niches are designed with black slag and white swell tuff . A wooden shingle roof serves as weather protection.

The wayside shrine is a monument of the city of Traunstein with the file number: D-1-89-155-128.

inscription

Drawing of the stone by Carl Weishaupt (1841)

The inscription is only preserved in fragments. The provincial governor Marcus Iuventius Surus Proculus is named, who carried out extensive road construction work in 201 AD. Since his name can also be found on 14 other milestones in the province, the inscription (with the exception of the distance at the end, which of course varied from milestone to milestone) can be reconstructed (reproduced using the Leiden bracket system ).

"[I] m [p (erator) Caes (ar) L (ucius) Septimius] / [Severus Pius Pertinax Aug (ustus)] / [Arab (icus) Parth (icus) max (imus)] / [pontif (ex ) max (imus) trib (unicia) pot (estate) VIIII] / [imp (erator) XII co (n) s (ul) II p (ater) p (atriae) proco (n) s (ul)] / [ et Imp (erator) Caes (ar) M (arcus) Aurel (ius) Antoninus] / [Pius Aug (ustus) trib (unicia) pot (estate) IIII proco (n) s (ul)] / [et [[P (ublius) Septimius Geta nob (ilissimus) Caes (ar)]]] / [miliaria vetustate conlapsa] / [restituerunt cur] ant [e] / [M (arco) Iu] ventio [S] uro Pr [oculo] / leg (ato) Aug (usti) pr (o) [pr (aetore)] / [ab Iuvavo] m (ilia) p (assuum) X [–––] "

“The Emperor Caesar Lucius Septimius Severus Pius Pertinax Augustus, the Arab victor, the greatest Parthian victor, high priest , for the ninth time bearer of tribunician power , proclaimed emperor for the twelfth time , consul , father of the fatherland as well as proconsul , and the emperor Caesar Marcus Aurelius Antoninus Pius Augustus, holder of tribunician power for the fourth time and proconsul, and Publius Septimius Geta, the noblest Caesar, have restored the milestones that had collapsed because of their age; it was supervised by Marcus Iuventius Surus Proculus, legatus Augusti pro praetore (= imperial governor). After Iuvavum 1 [–––] miles. "

The three mentioned emperors who, according to the inscription, initiated the restoration of the milestones are Septimius Severus and his two sons, the later rulers Caracalla and Geta .

Story of discovery

In 1840 it was found that the round base of the wayside shrine at Kraimoos had Roman characters, which made it a milestone. Research revealed that the stone was still standing on the Erlstätt churchyard wall around 1780 . A farmer from Schmidham bought it and set it up at a fork in the road not far from the historic Roman road Via Julia and provided it with the lantern.
