My Friend the Sheikh is a Swedish children's film from 1997. The film by director Clas Lindberg was based on a script by Ulf Stark .
There is also a German comedy called Mein Freund, der Scheik by director Rainer Erler from 1981.

Subject
Ulf lives in a small town in the 1950s. He lives a normal boy life there until something extraordinary happens. A sheikh visits the family. His father had contacted him over the radio. Ulf is looking forward to this visit. Meanwhile, a lot of things get mixed up in Ulf's life. His best friend has to move, and his secret love affair has another friend too. When the sheikh cancels his visit, Ulf has to take the initiative to save the situation.

The twelve-year-old Ulf lives with his parents and older brother in the 1950s in a suburb of Stockholm. Ulf's father is a radio amateur and tries to get in touch with a sheikh. Ulf's best friend is Percy. Together with other buddies they spend their free time together and dream of girls. Ulf likes Marianne very much. But he doesn't dare to speak to her. The only one who disturbs the peace in the small place is Lasse, an older boy who likes to beat up weaker people.

Ulf no longer wants to put up with the fact that they are always Lasse's victims. Then he discovers a book about hypnosis. And Lasse is actually confused when he tested Ulf his hypnosis skills on him. After that, he prefers to avoid the boys. Encouraged by his new skills, Ulf speaks to Marianne and hypnotizes her so that she kisses him, which she actually does. Ulf's father can also help Ulf. Since he had not yet managed to contact the sheikh, Ulf sends a hypnotic message over the radio. And so the sheikh answers the next day and wants to see Ulf's father on his next visit to Sweden, where he meets the king.
Ulf now thinks that he can achieve anything. And so he hypnotizes his father so that he can buy him a dog. But he does not think of doing this. Another attempt at hypnosis with Marianne also fails. She is supposed to fall in love with him, but she shows up with another boy. And then the sheikh cancels the visit. Lasse also noticed that Ulf can't really hypnotize. But the worst news comes from his best friend Percy. His father sells blinds, but his business is bad. Therefore the family has to move.
After Ulf has considered his situation, he realizes that he has to take the initiative. He learns self-defense from his older brother. That encourages him to show courage against Lasse. And Ulf also wants to help his father. He goes to Stockholm and manages to get close to the sheikh. Although he is stopped by bodyguards, the sheikh noticed him and promised to visit him anyway.
Indeed, the sheikh keeps his promise and the family has an exciting afternoon with the sheikh. And the sheikh also likes visiting a middle-class family. Therefore the Sheikh Ulf wants to grant a wish. At first Ulf thinks of wanting a dog, but then he knows that his friend Percy is more important. Therefore, he wants the sheikh to visit his friend as well.
Enough
Percy is very happy about the sheikh's visit, and so his pain of parting decreases. In Percy's parents' apartment, the sheikh becomes aware of Percy's father's blinds. Since Percy is skilled at negotiating, he manages to negotiate a contract with the sheikh. Thanks to the lucrative contract, the family no longer has to move. In the end, Ulf reconciles with Marianne again, so that his world is all right again.

First, the main character Ulf and his living environment are presented in a classic narrative style. All important people appear briefly. The world of Ulf consists of a tranquil small town from the 1950s. The people there still live largely isolated from foreign influences. But the time is marked by the beginning of technical and cultural changes. But exotic foreigners still seem very strange to people. Therefore, a sheikh's visit is an extraordinary event for them.

Ulf is a 12-year-old boy on the threshold of becoming a teenager. His world is manageable. But he is faced with a number of changes that he seeks to counter with magical hypnosis skills. Only when he realizes that you have to face your problems for real does he manage to improve the situation. When he finally puts his own wishes back in favor of his friend, he takes a decisive step in development.
Percy is a shy boy who has not yet realized his potential. At first he is very bad at school. Ulf helps him to gain self-confidence and to discover his strengths. When Percy realizes he's good at selling, he can transfer this skill to other areas.
