Meir Porusch

Meir Porusch ( Hebrew מאיר פרוש; *  June 11, 1955 in Jerusalem ) is an Israeli ultra-Orthodox rabbi and politician ( Agudat Jisra'el / United Torah Judaism ). He was a member of the Knesset from 1996 to 2011 and has been again since 2013. From 1996 to 1999 and from 2001 to 2003 he was Deputy Building Minister , from 2009 to 2011 Deputy Minister of Education .

Life

Porusch's father was Rabbi Menachem Porusch (1916-2010), one of the longest serving members of the Knesset. Porusch went to a yeshiva young . After thirteen years as a member of the Jerusalem City Council (temporarily deputy mayor), he entered the Knesset in 1996 as a candidate for Agudat Yisrael on the United Torah Judaism list and was Deputy Minister for Housing under Benjamin Netanyahu . In 1999 he kept his seat in the Knesset after the elections, but left the cabinet. After Ariel Sharon won the elections for Prime Minister in 2001, Porusch became Deputy Minister for Building and Housing. In 2003 and 2006, Porusch returned to the Knesset, but did not receive a cabinet post. Porusch ran for the election of Mayor of Jerusalem in 2008, but lost to the secular politician Nir Barkat . In 2009 he was re-elected to the Knesset and became Deputy Minister of Education. In 2011 he gave up both offices under a rotation agreement , but moved back to parliament in the 2013 elections.

Porusch lives in Jerusalem with his wife and twelve children.
