Master of the Andreas Altar

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A Gothic painter who worked in Vienna around 1420 is known as the master of the Andreas Altar . The artist, who is not known by name, received his emergency name from the Andreas altar that he created for the Neuklosterkirche in Wiener Neustadt . The middle part shows the apostle Andrew . The altar was moved to St. Stephen's Cathedral in Vienna in 1885.

The style of the master of the Andreas altar suggests a relationship to the work of the master of the St. Lambrecht votive tablet or influence of the workshop of Hans von Tübingen . Like these, he is close to the Soft Style and shows realistic sign language and detailed portrayals in the landscape and background, as can be found later in the Master of the Vienna Schotten Altar.
