Cadolzburg Altar - Grunewald Hunting Lodge

The master of the Cadolzburg Altar was a German painter who worked in the first half of the 15th century.

The painter, who is no longer known by name today, received his emergency name from a "crucifixion altar" for the parish church of Cadolzburg , which was created in 1426 and which the community gave to the then Prussian Crown Prince Friedrich III. was given and is now in the Grunewald hunting lodge in Berlin .

Image description

The central panel of the three-winged altarpiece consists of a crucifixion with Mary and John as well as the founders Friedrich I of Brandenburg and his wife Elisabeth of Bavaria-Landshut kneeling in prayer chairs . Maria, the elector and the sun are shown on the left, heraldic right, high-value side. The side wings show Saints Cecilia and Valerian , in electoral clothing with a sword, which also indicates his martyrdom by beheading. A scene of the Annunciation is shown on the back of the wings , with John, the electors and the moon opposite. The turning to the left to Mary, the body of Christ depicted in the soft style , is balanced out by the loincloth hanging over on the right. In addition, the picture is laid out symmetrically. The pointed gables, which are also on the Deocarus Altar donated in 1436/7 in St. Lorenz in Nuremberg, are unusual .

Story of the picture

After viewing it in 1873 and at his urgent request, Crown Prince Friedrich III. this as a present for his study in Berlin. Via the Hohenzollern Museum in Monbijou and the Berlin Palace, the panels restored in 1902 and in the 1950s were brought to the picture gallery in the Grunewald hunting lodge . The corresponding inactive leaves with depictions of the saints Urban and Sigismund remained in Cadolzburg and were burned there in 1945 in the museum set up in the castle.

The painter

The painter, who probably worked in Nuremberg , seems to have been influenced by Bohemian painting and was possibly a pupil of the so-called master of the Deichsler altar . In addition, he was apparently based on the so-called Master of the Bamberg Altar from 1429 , to whom the altar was previously ascribed. To this day, no further works could be assigned to him. The picture is typical of Nuremberg painting of the early 15th century.
