Master of the Lautenbach High Altar

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

As a master of Lautenbacher high altar ( Fri Peintre du maître-autel de Lautenbach (painter of the high altar of Lautenbach)) or master of Lautenbacher altarpiece is the late medieval designated painter, 1508-1511, the altarpiece incurred to the approximately 1480-1490 three-part high altar in the pilgrimage church of the Coronation of Mary in Lautenbach im Renchtal . Like the surrounding Renchtal, Lautenbach was part of the Strasbourg bishopric and the master shows the influence of Strasbourg painting of his time.

The panel paintings of the Gothic winged altar depict scenes from the life of the Virgin. They frame the carved middle section, in which there is a figure of Mary with the child surrounded by two saints. The three sculptures are covered with rich tendrils . In an outstanding integration of the art of carving and painting, the master of the Lautenbach high altar continues in his pictures the carved Gothic architectural elements that surround the figures in the middle section. He combines carvings and pictures into a seamless ensemble through a similarly filigree painted frame . The composition and iconography of the Lautenbach altar wings are similar to the Lichtenthal altar.

The Lautenbach high altar shows a high level of craftsmanship, so it was assumed that it could be a work from the circle of Albrecht Dürer , who from 1490 was on wanderings on the Upper Rhine, in Basel, Colmar and also in Strasbourg.

The paintings on the Altar of Sorrows of the Coronation of Mary, made between 1510 and 1520, are attributed to the master of the Lautenbach Altarpiece . It is suggested to assign a few other works to the master of the Lautenbach Altarpiece , including, for example, a picture of Saints Dorothea, Apollonia and Agatha.

The carver who created the middle section of the Lautenbach high altar is also sometimes referred to as the master of the Lautenbach high altar .
