from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Mercy Seat, Austrian Master ( Master of the London Mercy Seat ), early 15th century

The late Gothic artist who painted a picture of the Holy Trinity around 1420 or 1430 is known as the master of the Mercy Seat in London . The so-called mercy seat picture based on this motif is now in the National Gallery in London and gave the artist, who is not known for certain by name, his emergency name .

identification

The master of the mercy seat of London was active in Styria . He is usually equated with the master of the St. Lambrecht votive tablet or with Hans von Tübingen . Therefore, his emergency name is used with reservations in art history .

The London Mercy Seat

The mercy seat of London is the central panel of what was once a three-part winged altar . This can be seen from traces of the hinges on these wings. The picture shows the Trinity in a way that is special and typical for its time. Based on the motif of a Pietà , it shows the enthroned God the Father holding Christ crucified , surrounded by two angels. In the center of the picture the dove can be seen as a symbol of the Holy Spirit . This type of image is also known as the “mercy seat”.

In London, the picture is listed under the English title “The Trinity with Christ Crucified” (The Holy Trinity with Christ Crucified) and assigned to an unknown Austrian painter .

Painting style

The painting style of the Master of the London Mercy Seat is an example of the Soft Style in Styria. The master should show the influence of Rhenish painting in Styria, as shown by other Styrian painters of his time, sometimes summarized as the Murgtal School. The appeal of French painting from Avignon is also seen.
