Master of Berghofen (Hans Strigel the Elder?), Berghofer Altar, Allgäu 1438
Adoration of the Magi (fragment), around 1445, limewood, formerly colored; Ulm Museum

The medieval carver who created the shrine figures of the Berghofer Altar is sometimes referred to as the Master of Berghofen . The Gothic winged altar was donated around 1440 and can be found in the St. Leonhard Chapel in Berghofen, a district of Sonthofen in the Allgäu. In the center of the altar is the carved figure of Our Lady in a halo , around 1.20 meters high , surrounded by Saints Leonhard and Agatha.

The Berghofer Altar was probably commissioned from Hans Strigel the elder , who certainly painted the wings. Strigl, who worked in Memmingen , is a representative of the flowing soft style ; he painted with delicate colors, and although he is only known as a painter, the three carved figures in Berghofen were and are often regarded as his work. However, the choice of colors and folds of the figures are very different from other sculptures from the same period in the region and show a hardening of the soft style, so they are in all probability created by the master of Berghoifen as an independent artist. Strigel is said to have commissioned the woodwork of his altars to various specialized sculptors in the vicinity of the imperial cities of Memmingen and Ulm . The master from Berghofen is now part of the circle of Hans Multscher , a sculptor who came from the Allgäu and then ran an extensive and respected workshop in Ulm.

The master of Berghofen is attributed an Anna Selbdritt from 1460 in the St. Anna Church in Vils near Pfronten in the Allgäu, as well as a Madonna and Child Enthroned, which is shown in the National Gallery in Prague .
