Master of Guillebert de Mets

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

As Master of Guillebert de Mets ( English Master of Guillebert de Mets ) or Master of Guillebert von Metz ( French Maître de Guillebert de Metz ) an illuminator in Flanders in the first half of the 15th century is called. He was active in the heyday of Gothic book illumination in this region and probably had his workshop in Geraardsbergen . The artist, who is not known by name, got his emergency name after his miniatures , which he contributed to the manuscripts of the famous copyist Guillebert de Metz .

Work and attributions

On the one hand, around 1445 , the master of Guillebert de Mets contributed more than 30 pictures to a text of Boccaccio's Decameron translated from Italian into French . To this text, translated by Laurent de Permierfait and copied by Guillebert, a second, also unknown by name, the illuminator Master of Jean Mansel , contributed the other 100 pictures. Furthermore, the master of Guillebert de Mets was named after a second text previously written by Guillebert around 1434. It is a description of the city of Paris. The master contributed to the opening picture.

The master of Guillebert de Mets had either received his training in Paris himself or in a workshop in Flanders that was familiar with the Parisian style . The fine style of the master is also shaped by Italian influences . Typical of the master are his marginal strips with the depiction of leaves and tendrils, which, especially in his early works, for example with ivy, surround the sides he created in bold colors. The figures he painted depict the head areas prominently and clearly work out details of the eye and mouth areas. He also paints the hands of his figures with typical elongated fingers.

In addition to the two eponymous works, several other works can be assigned to the master of Guillebert de Mets through style comparison. This includes contributions to books of hours and also to secular texts. His pictures can be found on individual pages that were created separately from the manuscript and inserted soon after its completion. This indicates that the master did not paint on the instructions of the scribe, but painted on his own.

He was also known as the "Master with the Silver Skies " ( French maître aux ciels d'argent , English Master of the Silver Skies ).
