Mel Greig (born September 19, 1982 in Beaudesert , Queensland , Australia ) is an Australian journalist , presenter and reality show participant.

Life

Greig's parents are of Latvian origin. At the age of 15, Mel Greig left her hometown Beaudesert and tried to gain a foothold in Australian show business with her younger sister Alana . Several small television appearances followed in Australia for the siblings; so both took part in May 2011 as "Reunited Sisters" at The Amazing Race Australia .

After the siblings finished the show in seventh place, their career paths separated and they started their solo careers. Mel started out as a presenter and DJane for the Sydney- based radio station 2Day FM , where she took over the sketch show Hot 30 Countdown on March 9, 2012 . On the show, she played macabre phone pranks with colleague Mike Christian .

On December 5, 2012, Greig and Michael gained worldwide attention with their show when Greig posed as Elizabeth II on a call at King Edward VII's Hospital Sister Agnes . At the time, the pregnant Kate Middleton was being treated at the hospital. The identity of the callers was not questioned by hospital staff, and Greig and Christian obtained private information about the pregnant Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge .

After broadcasting the phone prank, the show gained worldwide attention. Jacintha Saldanha , the nurse who put the call through, committed suicide on December 7, 2012.

Greig was suspended from the station on December 8, 2012 and the program was taken off the program.
