Melbourne Sydney Inman (born July 15, 1878 in Brentford , † August 11, 1951 in Farnborough ) was an English English billiards and snooker player .

family

He was born the son of Robert Withy Inman (1844-1919) and Annie Cross (1852-1938). On May 19, 1905, he married Florence Ambler (1885–1971). With her he had a son, Melbourne Sydney Inman Jr. (1909-1947), who died before him.

Inman grew up in a pool family. His father, two uncles and three brothers were already pool players.

Career

His father ran "The Twickenharn Club" in London. Inman started playing billiards there at the age of 14. In 1908 he was able to win his first title at the Professional Championship . He won this title again in 1909, 1912–1914 and 1919.

His rivalry with Tom Reese , a high-class but inconsistent player, was known. Because of Inman's defensive and tactical style of play, Reese never managed to beat him.

At that time it was common to take part in other types of billiards. In 1914 he was able to beat the American carom player Willie Hoppe with 602: 304.

In 1927 he took part in the first world snooker championship . In the first round he was able to prevail 8: 5 against Tom Newman , but was defeated by Tom Carpenter 3: 8 in the quarterfinals .
