Melchior Karl Dörrien (born May 2, 1721 in Hildesheim , † July 8, 1746 in Braunschweig ) was a lawyer and advocate . He was also court master and teacher of law at the Collegium Carolinum in Braunschweig.

Life

Dörrien was the son of pastor Johann Jonas Dörrien (1684-1738) and his wife Lucia Katharina nee Schrader († 1733). From 1739 he studied law at the University of Göttingen . After completing his studies, he became a lawyer in Hildesheim around 1741 and one of the first public teachers and court master at the newly founded Collegium Carolinum in Braunschweig in 1745. During his short tenure there he fell ill with chest fever , which he succumbed to on the night of July 8, 1746. After his death, a first commemorative manuscript was printed for him in Latin.

In 1747, according to eyewitness reports, he was seen several times as a ghost in the building of the Collegium Carolinum. In particular, he appeared to Professors Johann Gottfried Höfer and Johann Ludwig Oeder . This ghost story spread beyond the borders of Braunschweig and, in addition to protocols, there were other writings on ghost lore about the incident. For example, Johann Joachim Eschenburg described the events in detail in 1812 in his draft of a history for the Collegii Carolini in Braunschweig (pp. 133–144). In the memos relating to the investigation into the incident, which Duke Karl had ordered, it was stated that it was very likely nothing more than a prank that some students had played on the professors and roommates.

Dörrien had three older siblings: Maria Agnesa (* 1715; † before 1733), Catharina Helena (1717–1795) and Martin Sylvester (* 1719).
