Sulfur difluoride is a chemical compound from the group of fluorides .

Extraction and presentation

Sulfur difluoride can be obtained by halogen exchange during the reaction of sulfur dichloride with potassium fluoride (170 ° C) or mercury (II) fluoride (150 ° C) or silver (I) fluoride (20 ° C) at pressures <25 mbar, whereby also other sulfur fluorides are formed.

It is also possible to produce it by reacting carbonyl sulfide with fluorine .

properties

Bond lengths and angles of sulfur difluoride

Sulfur difluoride is a colorless gas that exists as a monomer (SF 2 ) as well as a dimer disulfur tetrafluoride and trimer trisulfur hexafluoride. It is only stable for a short time in the diluted state and only in the absence of decomposition catalysts (such as hydrogen fluoride or metal fluorides), otherwise it decomposes via the di- and trimer to thiothionyl fluoride and sulfur tetrafluoride .
