The Bank of America 500 is the second race in the NASCAR Sprint Cup at Charlotte Motor Speedway in Concord , North Carolina , not far from Charlotte . It is usually held in October and covers a race distance of 500 miles. Before 1966, the race distance was 400 miles.

Due to the high ratings of the 2002 race, which started three hours later due to rain and ended during prime time, the circuit officials decided to postpone the race to Saturday evening.

In the 2002 season, Jamie McMurray set a new record in the modern NASCAR era since 1972 as a replacement for the injured Sterling Marlin : after just two races, he won his first race.
